Let Tehillah Go
"It’s all too easy to let the lessons from Sunday slip away as the week goes on. This study is a valuable tool to ensure you carry the message with you, integrating it into your daily routine and keeping the teachings alive throughout the week."
Welcome to our weekly Sermon Recap & Bible Study. Designed to help you build directly on Sunday morning's message, this guide features thought-provoking scriptures, personal reflections, practical action steps, and ways to share your faith. Let’s turn Sunday’s inspiration into a daily journey of growth!
On Sunday, we explored the powerful biblical concept of Tehillah—a Hebrew term that translates to a "new song," or a spontaneous song of praise celebrating what the Lord has uniquely done in your life.
Far from being restricted to Sunday morning church service, choir practice, or rhyming lyrics, Tehillah is your personal, daily testimony. As believers, we are called to build our spiritual lives on three core strands: The Word, Prayer, and Praise/Worship. When you offer a willing sacrifice of thanksgiving, you put off your flesh, silence the enemy, put on a "garment of praise" against heaviness, and invite the raw power and presence of God into your daily battles.
Key Scriptures from the Sermon
To understand Tehillah, we look to both the Old and New Testaments to see how God's people used spontaneous praise as a weapon, a witness, and an expression of intimacy.
- Psalm 40:1-3
"1 I waited patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry. 2 He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps. 3 He has put a new song in my mouth—Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the Lord."
- 1 Peter 2:9
"But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;"
- Isaiah 61:3
"...To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness..."
Personal Reflection
- What pit has God brought you out of? Think back on a specific season where God rescued, healed, or guided you. Your Tehillah is born directly out of your personal experience with the Living God.
- Where is your flesh resisting praise? The sermon noted that a sacrifice of praise means offering up something that doesn't want to die—your ego, your mood, or your self-consciousness. Are there areas in your life where you've let feelings or routine crowd out your spontaneous praise to God?
- Shifting from Singing to Worshipping: Do you find yourself merely "singing songs" on Sunday rather than truly connecting your heart to God? How can you cultivate a private rhythm of expressing your own unique "new song" to Him this week?
Practical Application: Living Out the Message
How do we take Tehillah off the church stage and build it into our everyday lives? Try these practical steps:
- Establish the Three-Strand Foundation: Balance your daily routine with The Word, Prayer, and Praise. When reading your Bible or praying, pause to sing or speak a spontaneous sentence of gratitude directly to God regarding what He did for you that day.
- Put On the Garment of Praise: The next time you feel a "spirit of heaviness," anxiety, or a low mood creeping in, refuse to let your flesh win. Use the Prayer Shawl illustration from the message: wrap yourself metaphorically in God's truth, lift your voice, and begin thanking Him out loud for His past faithfulness. Watch how it shifts the atmosphere.
- Write Your Own "New Song": Remember, your Tehillah doesn't need to rhyme and it doesn't need musical accompaniment. In your car, while doing dishes, or during a quiet morning walk, let out your own unique words of thanksgiving to God for who He is.
Sharing Your Faith with Others
Your Tehillah is not just for you—it is a supernatural witness to the watching world.
- Share Your Personal Testimony: When talking to friends or family members who don't yet know Christ, avoid religious clichés. Instead, share a raw, honest story of how God brought you out of your "miry clay" (Psalm 40). People can argue with theology, but they cannot argue with a transformed life and a genuine testimony.
- Invite Them into Your Joy: When going through a difficult trial alongside unsaved coworkers or neighbors, let your response be marked by a deep, unshakeable trust in God. When they ask how you maintain your peace, use it as an opening to declare the goodness of God and the joy He has placed in your heart.
Final Recap
Tehillah is much more than a musical style—it is a lifestyle of intimate, spontaneous praise that arises from your personal encounters with God. It builds your life on an unshakeable foundation of the Word, prayer, and worship, defeats the enemy in times of battle, and serves as a living witness to those around you. Let’s make Tehillah a daily constant in our mouths!
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for pulling us out of the horrible pit and setting our feet upon the Rock. We are so grateful that You don't just send peace, healing, and love—You ARE peace, healing, and love. Forgive us for letting our flesh grow quiet and for treating praise as something reserved only for Sunday mornings. Lord, put a fresh, new song in our mouths today. Give us the courage to offer a willing sacrifice of thanksgiving, to wrap ourselves in the garment of praise, and to silence the spirit of heaviness in our lives. May our daily testimony draw others to trust in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
